G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is about an elite force who has to combat against Cobra who are planning to destroy the world to make a profit off of it and is based off of the toy and comic/cartoon franchise. Okay, so that's the summary and here are the
PROS. The story line is actually pretty good without any slow parts that drag on. It is set in the future, so you just have to keep that in mind. All the characters were pretty well developed too: the back story on Duke and the Baroness, back story of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow (with awesome flashbacks of the young versions of themselves kicking ass), and learning a little bit about the other characters. I had my doubts about Marlon Wayans, but he added so much to the film. Without his comic relief and style, the movie would've lost a certain flare to it. Also, thought it was funny that Brendan Fraser made a cameo since he was apart of director Stephen Sommer's other franchise
The Mummy. Some of the fantasy fight scenes were cool: the submarine battle is something that I don't think has been done before with those kind of numbers in film so that was very cool, the girl fight between Baroness and Scarlet (and the fact she had her signature cross-bow...Bangarang!), and all of the sword fights between Snakes Eyes and Storm Shadow were so well done I could've just watched those. The costuming was also really well created. Finally, the babes! Sienna Miller is just flat out hot. She looked hot as a blond and brunette in the film, kicked ass, and the costume designer definitely showed off Miller's assets very very well. Rachel Nichols looked blazing as a red head with that tight suit she was wearing and she also was kicking ass. Very well done on the babe level.
The
CONS of the movie is that it really felt at times like a two-hour

video game. Because there was soooo much blatant use of CGI (computer graphics) in the film, it took away from the visuals and the illusion of the movie. It was like watching those short movies between levels on a video game while it loads. It might have been better as a video game than as a movie. I understand it's fantasy and blah blah blah but after seeing Bay's
Transformers 2 mesh real action and CGI so smoothly, I don't see why Sommers couldn't have done that for this film. You could tell when and where the green screens were being used. Even the fish and polar bear were CGI, I mean c'mon you can't get footage of that is bull. It also may have been better to have had a director like a Michael Bay who has a relationship with the military to have a more realistic look to the film, Sommers is much better with "historical pieces" (
The Mummy and
Van Helsing). The looks of the characters were good and they definitely set the film up for a sequel to find out about Destro and Cobra Commander.
OVERALL, the CGI kind of killed it for me making it look like a video game animatic, but it had a good story, good characters, the acting was on and off, but Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols were definitely on. If you're in the mood for an action pic, then see it, if not, there's no real rush.
RATING: 3 / 5 Bs.
