Embury's Basic Drinks: Martini

The Martini is such a classic drink. Clean looking, strong, flavorful, and you get olives or onions in it which are man garnishes. I'm not talking about those fru-fru drinks that women order, I'm talking about the neat solid cocktail of either gin or vodka. The Martini was the prefered drink of President FDR, WC Fields, Ernest Heminway, and, of course the most beastly, James Bond. Another classic cocktail that has its own glass named after it, the Martini is thought to have begun in 1862 but there are at least six different stories claiming to be the first. Such as the name Martini coming from the Martini & Henry rifle claiming that both the rifle and drink "shared a strong kick." Wherever this cocktail started, I'm damn happy it did.
Here's a recipe but there are many variations (gin or vodka, how much vermouth, dirty or non, olive or onion (aka a Gibson) or both, etc.):

Ingredients
2.5 oz of Gin (or Vodka)
.5 oz of Vermouth
3 green olives

Directions
Fill shaker up with ice and then pour in the Gin (or Vodka) and the Vermouth into the shaker. Shake for around 30 seconds or when you feel the shaker get colder. Pour the mixture into a chilled martini glass and on a toothpick, place the olives in the drink. Take a seat, drink, enjoy and save the olives for last to absorb the alcohol for the longest amount of time.

  1. I'm glad to see that you gave this recipe with gin. When gin is used, it is a "martini." When vodka is used, it is a "vodka martini." No matter how often people want to claim that a real martini can be made with vodka, they are wrong.

When it's shaken, it's a Bradford martini. When there is a pickled onion (very important that it is pickled or the drink will taste awful). When it has a higher ratio of gin to vermouth, it is a dry martini. When it has some added olive brine, it is a dirty martini.

You also forgot that some times a martini will be made with a twist of lemon. Just like the Gibson martini, this isn't standard. It must be requested.
