Embury's Six Basic Drinks a Man should know

According to David Embury's 1948 book of The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, there are 6 basic drinks every man should know how to make and enjoy: 1) The Old Fashioned, 2) Martini, 3) Manhattan, 4) Sidecar, 5) Daiquri, and 6) Jack Rose. And in the 50s to 70s, cocktails were king. This is when men would constantly drink at work and have their own signature drink to enjoy.

Embury outlines some basic principles for fashioning a quality cocktail:

  • It should be made from good-quality, high-proof liquor, nothing cheap.
  • It should whet rather than dull the appetite. So none of these sweet syrupy chick concoctions and have minimal fruit juice, egg or cream.
  • It should be dry with sufficient alcoholic flavor, yet smooth and pleasing to the palate.
  • It should be pleasing to the eye.
  • It should be well-iced.
I will post about the 6 drinks on their history and how to make them this week.
