Review - Funny People, Brilliant but...

Funny People, briefly, is about a celebrity comedian (Adam Sandler) who is sick and has Ira (Seth Rogen), a struggling comic, be his assistant as he re-enters the comic circuit and tries to get back his true love. Alright. So there were definitely a whole bunch of laugh out loud parts during this film with great lines and antics, but it's definitley not a usual Apatow film (i.e. Superbad or Knocked Up). With a cast like this: Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman, Eric Bana, and not to mention a monster list of amazing cameos of celebrities and comic greats. The movie can't be bad, which is true. There were some good memorable lines that will be remembered, and for a serious drama / comedy (aka dramedy) the flow of the film was really good. A few slow parts but for 2 hrs and 16 mins, you get a very solid story. Also, when you watch the film, look at the set decorations, some very cool pictures and funny things they made for Sandler's character George Simmons, which are Sandler's actual items.
One problem I had was the mixture of the different genres. At times it was drama and then flashed within milliseconds to comedy, but not smoothly creating a jarring effect of what-the-f*ck? There was a lot of sudden changes of emotions that didn't meld together like crying into laughter or fighting into friendship. But, a great thing was how Apatow and Sandler (who are best friends) used stories and gags from their real life and put them into the movie, so that created a much more realistic feel to the film.
Overall, the movie was funny with a good mix of drama. A little choppy with some connections, but the cast was hilarious, a much more realistic approach, and good/bad not a usual Apatow film. Can't wait for the DVD since Apatow loves improv so there'll definitely be some beastly extra features.
